Knitting Technique:

The first thing you learn to knit is a square.

I would visit Studio Knit and Learn these steps one at a time (linked below)

You need to learn how
1) to make a slip knot,
2) then how to cast on stitches.

Once you can cast on, you learn
3) the knit stitch
You can knit a square until you are happy about the length, then you
4) cast off & weave in ends

When you are ready, you may also learn
5) the purl stitch

I learned from my grandmother, but I have learned a lot about knitting from a website called Studio Knit.

Studio Knit

Once you have learned both the knit stitch and the purl stitch, you can start to combine them. First try the garter stitch and then the stockinette stitch.  But with just the knit stitch you can make many items.

Knit a square or rectangle for the following projects:
Scarf
Dish cloth
Sponge
Towel
Coaster
A blanket
A rug

Some projects require making a rectangle and sewing the ends together
Headbands, ear warmers
Coffee cozy
Headbands
Leg warmers
Fingerless gloves (leave room for thumb)
Cowls
——

Purses/coin purses/bags
*Knit 2.5 times the length you want for front, back and a flap
——
phone/eyeglass case, chapstick case *Knit twice length/ width & sew edges
——
Tea cozy
*Knit circumference of cup plus a little more and add buttons

Make measurements, cast on to measured length, knit as far as you need, cast off & seam if needed.
